World PT Day 2025: Empowering Healthy Ageing

On 8th September, observed globally as World Physiotherapy Day, K J Somaiya College of Physiotherapy joined hands with Dignity Foundation, an NGO working for the welfare of the elderly, to mark this important occasion. The theme for 2025 — Healthy Ageing: Focused on Prevention of Falls and Frailty — aligned perfectly with the College’s commitment to empowering senior citizens through physiotherapy.

Dr. Shweta Manwadkar, Principal of K J Somaiya College of Physiotherapy, said, “Preventing falls and promoting healthy ageing are key challenges in India’s rapidly growing elderly population. This collaborative initiative reflects the role of physiotherapy in improving seniors’ independence and quality of life. We are proud of our faculty and students who worked tirelessly to provide assessments, personalised exercise advice, and practical tips to help seniors stay safe and active.”

Following guidelines from World Physiotherapy UK, the College’s team of physiotherapists conducted activities from 8th to 12th September 2025, visiting Day Care and Chai Masti Centres in Jogeshwari, Chembur, Dadar, Mahalaxmi, and Mahim. In addition, the Dignity Foundation Mobile Van provided free physiotherapy services at Chunabhatti for elderly who face difficulty accessing such care.

Each participant underwent a thorough assessment of their physical and mental health, along with fall risk evaluation. Based on these assessments, they received tailored physiotherapy exercises and practical lifestyle advice.

In total, 200+ senior citizens benefitted from the initiative and shared positive feedback about feeling more empowered to manage their health. The Student Council (AY 2025-26) also contributed by preparing an information booklet summarising key points on healthy ageing and fall prevention, distributed to all participants.

Mr. Javed Sheikh, CEO of Dignity Foundation, added, “This joint initiative reflects our shared vision – empowering seniors with mobility, independence, and wellbeing while spreading awareness about preventive health in the wider community.”
