K J Somaiya Institute of Technology Celebrates 25 Years of Innovation and Impact with ‘Ekatva Pravah: Roupya Mahotsav’

Institutions are often measured not only by the years they have existed, but by the ideas they nurture, the minds they shape, and the impact they create in society. For K J Somaiya Institute of Technology (KJSIT), Mumbai, the completion of 25 years marks far more than a milestone—it represents a journey of sustained academic excellence, innovation-driven education, and a deep commitment to societal progress.

On 5 March 2026, the institute commemorated its Silver Jubilee with a celebration titled “Ekatva Pravah: Roupya Mahotsav.” The theme symbolised a continuous flow of unity—bringing together students, faculty, alumni, and the larger Somaiya community to reflect on the institute’s journey while looking ahead to the future of technology and education.

The event was graced by distinguished members of the Somaiya leadership including Shri Samir Somaiya, Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University and President of Somaiya Vidyavihar, Dr Ajay Kapoor, Vice Chancellor, Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Dr Suresh Ukarande, Director, K J Somaiya School of Engineering, and Dr Vivek Sunnapwar, Principal, K J Somaiya Institute of Technology. Their presence underscored the collective commitment of the Somaiya ecosystem towards nurturing institutions that combine academic rigour with social relevance.

A Journey of Academic Growth

Established in 2001, KJSIT has steadily evolved into a respected institution in engineering education. Over the years, it has strengthened its academic foundation while expanding its research and innovation ecosystem. The institute has been accredited with an ‘A’ Grade by NAAC, with several programmes receiving accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Achieving autonomous status in 2021 further empowered the institute to shape its curriculum in alignment with emerging technological needs.

Today, KJSIT offers undergraduate programmes in Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, along with a postgraduate programme in Artificial Intelligence. Its doctoral research centres across multiple disciplines further reinforce the institute’s focus on knowledge creation and advanced research.

Showcasing Student Innovation

A key highlight of the Silver Jubilee celebrations was the Research and Innovation Exhibition 2026, which brought student creativity and technological problem-solving to the forefront. Undergraduate students presented projects developed under faculty mentorship, addressing real-world challenges in areas such as healthcare technology, weather applications, road safety, and space science.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Samir Somaiya, who, along with other dignitaries, interacted with students and explored the projects on display. Their conversations reflected appreciation for the depth of thought, technical capability, and societal orientation demonstrated by the young innovators.

The exhibition also showcased the institute’s commitment to project-based learning, where theoretical understanding is complemented by practical experimentation and interdisciplinary thinking.

Strengthening Technological Research

Another significant moment during the celebrations was the inauguration of the Centre of Excellence in Internet of Things (IoT). The new centre is envisioned as a hub for experimentation and industry-oriented research in IoT technologies.

By providing students and faculty access to advanced infrastructure and collaborative opportunities, the centre aims to encourage the development of smart systems and next-generation technological solutions, while fostering partnerships with industry and research institutions.

Reaching Beyond the Earth: BeliefSat-0

Among the many achievements celebrated during the event, one stood out as a remarkable demonstration of student-led innovation—the launch of Somaiya BeliefSat-0, a satellite developed by the New Leap Labs student team.

The satellite was successfully launched by ISRO on 1 January 2024 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, and currently orbits approximately 350 kilometres above Earth. Designed to enable communication among amateur radio operators worldwide, the mission also commemorates 100 years of amateur radio in India.

BeliefSat-0 represents not only a technological achievement but also the spirit of curiosity and ambition that defines the institute’s academic culture.

Reflections from Leadership

In his address, Dr Vivek Sunnapwar reflected on the institute’s journey over the past quarter century, acknowledging the dedication of faculty members, the support of industry partners, and the vision of Somaiya leadership that has shaped the institute’s growth.

Dr Suresh Ukarande highlighted important milestones achieved by KJSIT, including accreditation achievements, academic autonomy, and the strengthening of research initiatives.

Congratulating the institute on its Silver Jubilee, Dr Ajay Kapoor encouraged the academic community to continue pursuing excellence in teaching, research, and innovation, while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of society.

In his keynote remarks, Shri Samir Somaiya spoke about the importance of vision, perseverance, and values in building enduring institutions. Reflecting on the legacy of Shri K J Somaiya, the founder of the Somaiya Group, he emphasised the significance of pursuing ambitious ideas while remaining grounded in the principles of dignity of labour and responsible leadership. He also highlighted the opportunities for expanding academic programmes in emerging technological domains that will shape the future.

Celebrating Community and Social Responsibility

The Silver Jubilee celebrations were not confined to academic milestones alone. The event concluded with a Walkathon across the Somaiya Ayurvihar campus, symbolising collective progress and unity within the Somaiya community. Cultural performances representing diverse Indian traditions added vibrancy and festive energy to the evening.\

As part of the commemorative activities, the institute also organised a ‘Joy of Giving’ Week from 9 to 13 February 2026. During this initiative, students and faculty contributed donations and essential supplies to Bal Snehalaya, an orphanage supported by the Rainbow Foundation in Thane. The initiative reflected the Somaiya philosophy that education must remain closely connected to compassion and social responsibility.

Looking Ahead

The Silver Jubilee of K J Somaiya Institute of Technology served as both a moment of reflection and a forward-looking celebration. Over the past 25 years, the institute has built a strong foundation of academic excellence, technological innovation, and community engagement.

As it moves into the next chapter of its journey, KJSIT continues to focus on nurturing future-ready engineers, fostering research-led innovation, and contributing meaningfully to society through technology and education—ensuring that the flow of “Ekatva Pravah” continues to inspire generations to come.
