A new chapter of SPIC MACAY was inaugurated during the annual cultural festival Surge, held on 12th and 13th March 2026, bringing a renewed focus on Indian classical arts and cultural heritage to the campus community.
The inauguration was carried out by Ustad Kamal Sabri, a globally recognised Indian classical sarangi maestro, vocalist and composer from the seventh generation of the Sainia Gharana of Moradabad. Known for his expressive style and dedication to preserving classical traditions, Ustad Sabri shared insights into the history and evolution of the sarangi, an instrument celebrated for its ability to closely resemble the human voice.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was a captivating musical presentation featuring Ustad Kamal Sabri alongside Prof Rupak Pawar, a distinguished tabla artist and faculty member at the Maya Somaiya School of Music and Performing Arts. The jugalbandi between the sarangi and tabla created a vibrant exchange of melody and rhythm, offering students a rare opportunity to witness the depth and beauty of Indian classical music.
SPIC MACAY, the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth, is a voluntary cultural movement dedicated to preserving and promoting India’s rich artistic heritage. Through performances, lecture demonstrations and workshops, the organisation introduces young audiences to classical music, dance, yoga, meditation and traditional crafts.
The inauguration formed a key highlight of Surge 2026, whose theme ‘Asteria: All the Stars are Closer’ celebrated creativity, talent and collaboration.
The establishment of the SPIC MACAY chapter marks an important step towards encouraging students to engage more closely with India’s classical traditions while providing them with opportunities to learn from renowned artists and cultural practitioners.
