Students Achieve National Recognition at Microbiolympiad

Students from the Department of Microbiology at K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce brought laurels to the institution by securing top positions at the National-level Microbiolympiad, a prestigious competition for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Life Sciences. The achievement reflects the department’s consistent emphasis on academic excellence and active participation in national scientific platforms.

Three FYBSc Microbiology students — Shreya Padwale, Umaima Chaudhary and Siddhi Shetty — secured second place in the final round of the MicrobioQuiz event at the national level. The finals were held at CKT College, New Panvel, where the team competed against participants from institutions across the country. The students were awarded a trophy, medals and a cash prize of ₹3000 in recognition of their performance.

Adding to the department’s success, Soha Joshi, a student of MSc Part I, secured third place in the Microbiopodium competition, another category of the Microbiolympiad that tests participants on their knowledge, presentation skills and scientific understanding.

Earlier in the competition cycle, the Department of Microbiology conducted the first round of the MicrobioQuiz in collaboration with the Government Institute of Science, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad). Students from FYBSc, SYBSc, TYBSc and MSc programmes participated in the preliminary round, which was conducted through the IBS Academy app. The event provided students with a platform to assess their knowledge of microbiology and engage with the wider academic community.

The Microbiolympiad is organised annually to encourage scientific curiosity and strengthen conceptual understanding among students of Life Sciences. The competition includes multiple events such as MicrobioQuiz, MicrobioCanvas, Microbioread and Microbiopodium.

The achievements of the students highlight the department’s strong culture of mentorship and its continued efforts to encourage participation in national-level academic competitions.
